(IntegrityMag.com) – The US Supreme Court has been in the news a lot lately. Its new term began this week, and many commentators have speculated at the potential significance of the 6-3 conservative-appointed majority. Several Democratic politicians have suggested increasing the number of judges on the bench to even things up, but there has been strong pushback against this idea from the public.
On Wednesday, October 6, reports emerged that a petition with 400,000 signatures was making the rounds, imploring the presidential Supreme Court commission not to pursue court-packing. Signatories include former Attorney General Edwin Meese and other high-profile figures from the legal world who have added their names.

President Joe Biden created the commission in April, directing members to consider possible Supreme Court reforms, including increasing the number of members. Advocacy groups have expressed concerns about this possibility, though. Kelly Shackelford, president of First Liberty Institute, was unequivocal when he stated his opposition to court-packing, suggesting Democrats wanted to do it purely for political reasons.
Under the system of checks and balances designed by our nation’s framers to minimize the risk of a tyrannical government, they intended the judiciary to function as an apolitical organization. If the Biden administration moves to add more Supreme Court Justices, the decision could fundamentally threaten the separation of powers and undermine the Court.
